Artist Statement To create something new in a society inundated with contemporary art requires ingenuity. Moreover, it calls for a willingness to be lost and afraid before hurling oneself into challenges that push beyond the comforts of the past. This viewpoint requires me to be impressionable to the unique objectives of each piece. Throughout my work as an artist, I have found that the creative impetus that motivates my painting is very much the same as the passion that drives my performance and installation work. As I strive to remain abreast of contemporary arts movements, I communicate my perceptions of culture and society with a variety of media and a broad range of techniques. The underlying themes of my work are based in observations of people and environments and include topics of sensuality, gender, psychology, and stereotyping. This material is not only fascinating, but also important to examine as I strive to challenge conventional thinking. I find art to be most approachable as representation of the everyday objects, people, sounds, events, and environments in which we find ourselves. Additionally, I have discovered that by mimicking our external surroundings in private spaces like galleries or museums, the work is better able to challenge viewers’ perspectives and address complex social themes in an environment that appears safe and familiar. Being a part of a contemporary arts community and connecting an audience with my work is as important to me as creating the work. I have found a great deal of personal and professional success in work that has the potential to produce powerful emotional connections with a variety of audiences. . | |
